shitty first drafts

When this pattern is listed as "piquant," meaning somewhat challenging and meant for a relatively advanced knitter, it is not meant in jest.

I have just begun and ripped it out no less than five times. First, because the toe-up cast-on is pretty much the hardest thing I've ever had to do (it's hard!), and then beacuse I got messed up on the lace pattern on the top of the foot.

I finally ripped it all out and just tried the lace pattern in a flat swatch, and it STILL didn't come out right. So I tried it again, and now I think I figured out what I was doing wrong. You know, when you yarn over before a purl stitch, you probably have to yarn over in a more useful way than just the usual Bring Yarn To Front that you ALWAYS do when purling. Yeah. I'm clever like that.

So now my back is stiff and my eyes hurt, but I think I can start the damn thing again tomorrow with confidence that I have Resolved The Issue. Fortunately, the yarn is a dream to work with, so there's no real hard feelings between us.

I sense some resentment on the part of the needles, however. perhaps they object to being constantly refered to as #2.

Oh number 2 needles, you will always be #1 with me.
