Handmade for the Holidays 2010

It's time for Handmade for the Holidays again!

Handmade for the Holidays is an annual holiday charity crafting event in which we (Melissa Averinos and I) invite folks on Cape Cod to create hand-crafted items for donation to local women and children in need. Beginning TONIGHT, we will start to collect hand-knit hats, scarves, mittens, blankets, and quilts, as well as donations of yarn, needles, and other knitting and crafting supplies to be used by local volunteer crafters.

If you're local to the Cape Cod area, join us each Wednesday night for Craft Circles from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm -- just an informal gathering of folks at Yummy Goods in West Barnstable, ostensibly so that we can all sit around knitting and crocheting projects for Handmade for the Holidays, but really so that we can sit around laughing and eating cookies and hot mulled cider.

You should come!

Seriously, don't worry if you can't knit or crochet. We can teach you, if you're game. We can also leave you alone with the cookies if you just want to hang out and support a good cause. Last year I taught a ton of folks how to get started with a simple scarf, and it was awesome. We have plenty of donated yarn and spare needles and crochet hooks, so don't fret on that count, either.

We always partner with a local nonprofit (in 2009, it was the fabulous organization WE CAN, who will be working with us again this year, as well as The Family Pantry), who will ensure that the items go directly to needy women and families in time for the holiday season. All participants — and the general public — are invited to celebrate the conclusion of the project at a public open house at Yummy Goods (Melissa’s awesome shop) on Wednesday, December 8 from 5:00 pm until whenever the cider runs out.
